Byron Aged Care History
In the late 1960’s a group of Byron Bay citizens identified the need for an aged care facility to serve the Byron Bay district. An association was formed, plans were formalised to acquire a suitable site, the association was registered as a charity, and community fundraising commenced.
In 1969, the development of plans for the facility was commissioned with the brief that the building was to be above the then accepted standards, be climate- friendly and provide a home-like environment for its residents.
Construction of stage one (a 10-bed wing with ancillary services), was completed and opened in 1972. In 1982 the first of several additions to the facility was completed, followed by further additions in subsequent years, to bring the total accommodation to the current 39 residents. The construction of the initial two stages was assisted by Commonwealth construction subsidies. Ever since, all further extensions and upgrades have been financed by the facility.
The association was originally known as the Australian Orthodox Home for the Aged Association. This later became an Incorporated Association. As the association’s assets grew, this was changed to a Company Limited by Guarantee, along with a name change to Byron Aged Care Limited.
Governance
In February 2015, the Byron Aged Care Board was revitalised and now includes industry, care and business specialists. The new board’s vision is to maintain the highest standards of care, and is committed to nurturing an environment where people feel emotionally and physically secure and supported.
Today the not-for-profit, community-based, non-denominational organisation is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors and is fully accredited by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. The day-to-day running of the home is entrusted to its Director of Care, with the support of our well experienced and qualified board.
